Our Origin Story
Tech4Pets was born from an unexpected collision of my professional expertise and personal heartbreak. As Dr. Szczepan Baran, I've spent my career at the intersection of veterinary medicine and human health technology. Yet it took losing both my parents within 18 months—and then their beloved dog Perulka just two days after my mother's passing—to show me how these worlds could connect. When our own family dog, Porkchop, followed barely a month later, the gap between my professional knowledge and personal experience became painfully clear.
You might think that as two veterinarians—my wife being the finest I know—we'd have been perfectly equipped for these decisions. But even with our combined decades of clinical experience, determining the right time felt impossible. We found ourselves in the same position as countless other pet parents: caught between hope and acceptance, craving more time while questioning if we were waiting too long. The difference was, we knew exactly what technology could do in human medicine to make these decisions clearer.
It was during that grief-filled Christmas that our children asked the question that would change everything: "Dad, why didn't we put those tracking things you use on your patients on Porkchop and Perulka?" The simplicity of their question was stunning. In my work, I routinely used AI-driven wearables to monitor human patients and had even helped develop similar tools for veterinary research. Yet somehow, I had never connected these dots for our own pets—the very animals we loved most.
That question hit differently coming from our children. Here I was, spending my days at the intersection of veterinary medicine and human health technology, yet I hadn't bridged that gap for our own pets. When I began investigating why, I discovered a fragmented landscape: while pet wearables existed, there was no trusted authority helping pet parents navigate these tools. Despite my unique position to evaluate both the veterinary and technical aspects of these solutions, even I had struggled to implement them in my personal life. It became clear that if someone with my background found this challenging, other pet parents must be completely overwhelmed.
This realization became Tech4Pets' founding mission. With my unique background bridging veterinary medicine and health technology, combined with my wife's clinical expertise and our children's inspiration, we set out to revolutionize pet healthcare. We're not just another pet tech company—we're veterinary professionals who understand both the clinical and emotional challenges of pet parenthood. While data can't make saying goodbye easier, we believe that bringing human-grade health monitoring to veterinary care can help every pet parent make more confident decisions, guided by both heart and science.
